CHAPTER SEVENTY

My head felt like mush from all the information I had absorbed, all the scenarios and outcomes I imagined, and the frustration of not knowing what to do.

Janice came out of the bathroom, returned to the couch, and opened her book. I finished reading the files again and had enough. I moved to the floor. I didn’t even bother with meditation. I went straight to yoga, starting with a position lying on my back.

Janice watched for a few minutes. “What about me?”

“Please, join me. It’s better than watching or being watched.”

We spent an hour doing yoga, then I moved Janice into a slowed-down Tai Chi without telling her. Every move was a defensive move, but it looked more like ballet at the speed we moved.

An hour of Tai Chi was more strenuous than yoga and left Janice sweating. “I thought yoga wasn’t supposed to be this much work.” She wiped her face with the sleeve of her sweatshirt.

“That’s because you were doing Tai Chi.”

“You’re teaching me to fight?”

“If you were to continue studying, I would tell you I was teaching you to defend yourself. Every move in our little workout routine was a defensive move. But to be useful, it needs to become instinct and fast. Otherwise, it’s an excellent workout routine.”

“I think I’ll be content with that. I have you to protect me. That should be enough, right?”

“Let’s hope things get resolved, and we never have to find out.”

Janice headed for the shower. I paged through the files again, hoping for a glimmer, an insight, something I missed the other times through them, but found nothing.

She returned to the couch and her book. I headed for the shower.

When I finished, Janice was asleep on the couch. I set aside the files and my computer and began to clean weapons. Either I was engrossed, or she was as quiet as I tried to be, because I looked up and she was watching from across the table.

“Are you preparing for war?”

I sighed. “I am preparing for whatever it takes to make sure you and your daughter are safe. If people come looking for a war, I’ll give them one.

Janice extended her hand toward one of the weapons, then pulled it back before she made contact. “I don’t know how, but I feel safe when I’m with you.”

“I’m glad. Because you are.” I loaded shells into Delilah’s cylinder, flipped it closed, and slid it into the holster.
